A Green Convention

In preparation for the 2009 Convention, we’ve continued to seek new ways to make our Convention a more sustainable event. We’ve sought suppliers whose products are sustainably produced, looked for ways to make do with fewer printed pages, and have re-examined the way we’ve done things for many years. We do this because when it comes to British Columbia, “same old, same old” is simply not an option anymore.

For this Convention, we are doing five simple things to help reduce our environmental footprint. We have included our list below in hopes that you will join in this challenge and help us reduce our footprint even more than you did last convention.

  • Convention 2009 will be a bottled water-free zone. Water will be available on the Convention floor to delegates in glassware. Non-reusable containers will not be allowed in the Convention Hall. Bring your own water bottle/coffee mug to Convention. Vendors will discount for bringing your re-usable mugs.
  • The Ruby Gala Dinner will feature a menu of delectable choices from local producers: good for the BC economy and the environment. Buy your ticket to the Ruby Gala and help support our efforts for a truly local menu.
  • We are further reducing the amount of paper produced at Convention and asking delegates to share copies of documents. We are using recycled paper in all documents, including FSC-certified paper from our suppliers. Be a paper-free delegate! Register to receive an e-kit, and download your convention kit to your laptop and have all the materials available electronically at your fingertips.
  • The Convention venue, Westin Bayshore, continues to make it’s operations more sustainable by installing efficient fixtures and systems and reducing the waste from hotel housekeeping.
  • When travelling to convention, use public transit, carpool or bike to Convention. If you’re travelling from out of town, consider buying a carbon offset for your travel.
