Keeping BC Green
British Columbia's environment is the envy of the rest of the world. Mountains and valleys, forests, rivers, lakes and oceans - we have it all right here in BC.
But Gordon Campbell's agenda threatens the future our environment. He pretends to care about sustainability, but the record shows he's an environmental hypocrite.
Carole James knows that protecting our environment is a fundamental priority. She understands that fighting climate change is the most important challenge facing our generation.
She is committed to ensuring a healthy environment, clean air and safe drinking water for future generations.
Gordon Campbell:
Environmental hypocrite
BC still hasn’t recovered from the 44% cut Gordon Campbell inflicted on environmental protection programs when he first came to office. And his agenda will only make things worse:
- Gordon Campbell supports ending the moratorium on oil and gas drilling on our sensitive coast.
- He is fast-tracking coal bed methane development despite its harmful impacts on the environment and water tables.
- He is selling off public control and threatening the ecosystems of hundreds of rivers and watersheds for private power production.
- Campbell continues to ignore recommendations that salmon farms take a precautionary approach to protect wild fish species.
- BC remains one of only two provinces without protection for endangered species.
- Campbell is increasing old growth logging and raw log exports, and converting high quality forest land to real estate development.
“[Gordon Campbell is] going green around the edges and that’s it. There’s no green in the centre.”
– Vicky Husband former Conservation Chair, Sierra Club of BC,

Carole James and the New Democrats:
Action for a sustainable BC
Carole James understands that British Columbians want a real commitment to a sustainable future. The NDP will deliver real action on climate change, strong environmental protection and tough rules for polluters.
It’s time to take back your BC. Carole James and the NDP will:
- Introduce BC Green Bonds to stimulate jobs and investment in green infrastructure while reducing greenhouse gases.
- Fight climate change by setting hard caps on greenhouse gas emissions by 2010, to achieve a 33% reduction by 2020.
- Build on the work of leading climate change experts to develop a continental cap and trade plan, such as the plan proposed by US President Obama.
- Adopt California’s tough vehicle tailpipe emission standards.
- Continue the moratorium on coastal drilling and crude oil tanker traffic on the BC coast.
- Immediately expand transit and alternatives to car use.
- Protect endangered wildlife with BC’s first species at risk legislation.
- Restore Gordon Campbell’s cuts to water, air and land protection.
- Increase support for our parks.
- Stop Campbell’s gutting of the environmental land reserve.
- Restore independence to the Agricultural Land Reserve.
- Protect endangered rivers and watersheds.
- Expand retrofit programs to reduce energy use and cut greenhouse gases.
- Improve Environmental Assesment.
“Our governments are failing to protect our salmon, our oceans and our future from open net-cage salmon farms. That is a fact.”
