VANCOUVER – B.C. New Democrat Leader Adrian Dix issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the B.C. New Democrat caucus, I want to congratulate Simon Whitfield on being named the flag-bearer for Canada’s Olympic team at the opening ceremonies in London.

“As a double-medal winner in the triathlon – and the first ever to win an Olympic gold medal in the event – Simon is an excellent choice for the honour.

“Simon brings extraordinary qualities to his sport. It was his determination and impressive work ethic that led Simon to gold in Sydney in the 2000 Olympics, where he recovered from a crash in the bike portion and proceeded to overtake competitors through the run. He epitomizes the grit and determination - combined with an open, friendly outlook - that British Columbia and Canadian athletes will bring to London.

“So on behalf of all British Columbians, I want to applaud the Canadian Olympic Committee on an excellent choice for flag-bearer, and wish Simon and his fellow athletes all the best as they represent our country beginning 15 short days from now.”
