BACKGROUNDER: JAMES CALLS FOR ACTION FOR B.C.’S FILM AND DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT SECTOR

Summary:

New Democrat Leader Carole James called on the B.C. Liberals to act now to protect and strengthen B.C.'s film and television industry, capitalize on the potential of B.C.'s digital entertainment sector and encourage economic innovation.

She was joined by industry leaders concerned about B.C.'s inaction, which has put the province at a competitive disadvantage over jurisdictions that have already taken steps, including Quebec and Ontario.

James, along with New Democrat arts and tourism critic Spencer Herbert and finance critic Bruce Ralston, called for the implementation of specific proposals, which are based on key recommendations made by the industry.

Proposals:

  • Enhance the following three targeted tax credits associated with the industry:
  • Digital Animation, or Visual Effects Tax Credit (DAVE)
  • Productions Services Tax Credit
  • Film Incentive BC Tax Credit
  • Provide a bonus for pilot and first year of television series
  • Implement an Intellectual Property Development Fund for B.C.-owned film, television, and digital media projects
