STATEMENT FROM ROBIN AUSTIN AND DIANE THORNE ON FAMILY LITERACY DAY

VICTORIA-New Democrat education critic Robin Austin, and deputy education critic Diane Thorne, released the following statement on Family Literacy Day:

"Today, as families and communities across the province celebrate Family Literacy Day, it is important for us each to take the time to remember the important role that literacy plays in our lives, our homes and our economy.

"As a society we stand to make tremendous gains by investing in literacy in all its forms, whether it is by supporting our local libraries, taking the time to read to a child, or volunteering to help newcomers to our country gain proficiency in English.

"A strong public education system is the foundation of future prosperity in our province, and the key to a strong, inclusive economy. I hope that British Columbians will join us, and the whole New Democrat caucus, as we pledge to protect public education and celebrate the joy of reading."
