BC NDP nominates five-time MLA, community leader, and human rights activist Spencer Chandra Herbert in Vancouver-West End

Surrounded by friends, family and supporters, Spencer Chandra Herbert was officially nominated as the BC NDP's candidate in Vancouver-West End for this fall’s provincial election.

First elected in a by-election in 2008, and re-elected four times since, Spencer Chandra Herbert has deep roots in Vancouver’s vibrant West End community. As an MLA, Spencer has stood up for renters facing illegal evictions, worked to reduce homelessness by founding Vancouver’s Rent Bank and led the successful fight to explicitly protect transgender people in BC’s Human Rights Code.

“It is an honour to work with, and stand up for West Enders and Coal Harbour residents everyday. I’m running to stand up for renters, to support our seniors, to improve access to healthcare, and protect our environment. Together we build strong, safe, inclusive communities. Thank you for the honour of running to be your MLA once more.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Vancouver-West End, including:

  • Tackling housing prices by taking on real estate speculators, building more homes for people, and implementing new regulations to protect renters and landlords;
  • Strengthening healthcare by building and expanding hospitals in Vancouver; Burnaby, Surrey and Richmond, and bringing more doctors and nurses to BC;
  • Creating thousands of affordable childcare spaces; and
  • Introducing CleanBC, North America’s most ambitious climate action plan.

“Spencer Chandra Herbert’s dedication to the people of Vancouver’s West End is unmatched,” said Premier David Eby. “From housing to healthcare to affordability, I know he’ll continue to be a champion for the issues that matter to people and their families in this community.”

The BC NDP will run a full slate of 93 candidates when British Columbians go to the polls on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
