Communications Officer - Election 2024

The BC NDP is seeking an experienced communications professional with a strong understanding of BC politics who is determined to re-elect a BC NDP government.

As Communications Officer, a typical day may include prepping a candidate for a media interview, training a team of canvassers on our messaging over a webinar, writing copy for print and digital products, and responding to media requests. You’ll need to be quick on your feet and able to juggle a lot of balls at once.

Elections are dynamic projects where you’ll be working with a talented team of professional campaigners, volunteers and candidates. You must be able to thrive in a team environment and stay cool under pressure. Above all else, the best Communications Officers are those that bring creativity to their work.

Responsibilities:

  • Writing press releases, speaking notes leaflets, candidate biographies, and other communications materials
  • Preparing candidates for media interviews and events
  • Contributing to campaign media strategy to help plan specific, timely stories and responses
  • Establishing relationships with media across BC to respond to requests and build stories
  • Work closely with field organizers and local campaigns to monitor issues and build stories and strategies
  • Providing ongoing training and support to candidates, local campaigns and campaign staff
  • Responding to breaking news and managing issues as they arise
  • Work with our digital team to ensure proper messaging, style and relevancy
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience:
  • Working with local, provincial and/or national media
  • Writing press releases, statements, op-eds and other communications materials and pitching ideas in a high-paced environment
  • Organizing media events
  • Working with a message box and training others

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Detail-oriented with fantastic time management skills
  • Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to multi-task / change task on short notice
  • Familiarity with BC’s media landscape, including local, print, radio and digital media
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, jumping into whatever task is required, in a fast-paced campaign environment
  • Commitment to BC NDP values and knowledge of BC NDP structure, history, policies and principles
  • Keen follower of political and BC news
  • Experience with political campaigns or political organizing will be considered an asset
  • Experience working with multilingual media outlets will be considered an asset
  • Relationships with reporters covering political news in BC will be considered an asset

Terms and Conditions

This is a term position reporting to the Provincial Director and the Director of Media Relations through November 1, 2024 (with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement).

The position is covered by the CUPE 3787 Collective Agreement with a monthly starting wage of $6623.45 to $6923.83, depending on experience, and benefits including vacation and extended health coverage.

The position is based at the BC NDP office in Vancouver, BC, with some flexible and remote work options available upon mutual agreement.
