B.C. LIBERALS FAILING TO BACK UP PROMISES ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
VICTORIA - The B.C. Liberals must back up their promises on domestic violence with the investment to bring in real changes, say the New Democrats.
"British Columbians have been calling on the government to take real steps to protect children and their families from the tragic effects of domestic violence. Unfortunately, the B.C. Liberals continue to fall short," said solicitor general critic Mike Farnworth.
"While yesterday's announcement contains some good ideas, if the government isn't willing to invest the resources necessary to address the serious issue of domestic violence, this will become just the latest broken promise from the B.C. Liberals."
On Monday, the B.C government announced a new death review panel, $25,000 for a domestic violence unit in Greater Victoria, and some changes to the bail system.
"This announcement is far too small of a step and doesn't undo the damage wreaked by the B.C. Liberals' cuts to front-line services," said Farnworth.
"Next year, the B.C. Liberals plan to cut $1.2 million in funding for transition houses and services for women and children who have survived violence."
Farnworth noted the B.C. Liberals are cutting successful and respected programs for addressing domestic violence, including a specialized crown prosecutor position in Langley.
"If the B.C. Liberals were serious about fighting domestic violence, they would stop dragging their heels, stop the cuts to transition homes and valuable services and put in place the necessary tools to support families at risk."
Carole James and New Democrats will continue to hold the B.C. Liberal government to account for their abysmal record on fighting domestic violence and protecting children and families.
