Comox Valley Faces 83 Per Cent Cut To Special Olympics During Year B.C. Is Set To Host Olympics

COMOX VALLEY— New Democrat leader Carole James held the B.C. Liberal government to account today over cuts to the Special Olympics in the Comox Valley.

Last year, Special Olympics in the Comox Valley received $15,000, which has been reduced to $2,500 this year.

“During a time when the B.C. Liberals have made a conscious choice to waste hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on luxury suites at the GM Place and almost half a million dollars more on three sports ministers’ offices, they are cutting funding for Special Olympics athletes in communities like the Comox Valley,” said James. “It shows once again that the B.C. Liberals have the wrong priorities.”

James noted that the cuts mean that local organizations will no longer be able to help athletes with the cost of training and it may threaten their chances to compete in the Special Olympics.

“It’s cold-hearted and mean-spirited for the B.C. Liberal government to cut funding for Special Olympics athletes, especially as we prepare to host the Olympics in B.C.,” said James.
