BC Conservative health critic supports two-tier healthcare: “they pay from their own pockets… that’s great, right?”
The BC NDP has released an audio clip of BC Conservative Health Critic Anna Kindy explicitly supporting two-tier, user-pay healthcare:
Kindy: “Eventually what happens is you open up to a private system, which we already have. So then there's competition and some people will want to pay. So you get people then off the list so they pay from their own pockets if they want to. That's great, right? And it actually saves us money.”
Audience member: “The fear mongering about that is that all the doctors are going to go to private care and that the public system will be under-resourced, and that people who are on the public system will end up waiting up longer because the doctors are all gone to–”
Kindy: “But there's ways to mitigate that. And interestingly, I can't remember what country it was, that the nurses wanted to work in the public system because they were paid better. So in terms of physicians you can manage a minimal amount. For example, physicians now work in both systems right? We need to work X amount. I mean, there's ways to go about it. Other countries are doing it. We just have to look at it.” (Audio)
Earlier in the campaign, Interim Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson was asked if he would rule out Kindy as Health Minister. He avoided the question.
Nanaimo-Gabriola Island Conservative Candidate Mark Macdonald agrees with Kindy: “Private health care – or a parallel, user-pay system working in tandem or competition with the existing monolith, is the only solution.”
