Today, the BC Conservative Interim Leader Lorne Doerkson pledged to expand LNG production in B.C., but his own targets fall well below the current pace of development.

Doerkson committed to tripling LNG production by 2035.

B.C. currently has five LNG projects either under construction or permitted and moving towards final investment decision (FID). With those projects alone, B.C. is already on track to more than triple production by 2035.

B.C.’s current LNG production capacity is 14 million tonnes per year. By 2035, these five projects will expand that capacity to nearly 48 million tonnes, almost six million tonnes more than Doerkson’s pledge.

Since 2017, B.C. has seen the fastest overall growth in capital investment in the country, up 124%, nearly four times Alberta’s rate (Statistics Canada).

Under the BC NDP, $130 billion in proposed major projects are on the way across a range of sectors - including mining, LNG and clean energy - to fuel diversified economic growth and build an economy that’s less reliant on the United States. B.C. LNG is among the lowest-emission LNG in the world, and under the BC NDP, new LNG projects must be net-zero-ready by 2030.

With numbers that don’t add up, it’s clear the BC Conservatives’ chaos means they aren’t ready to govern.
