BC Conservatives would stop construction on Massey replacement
Interim BC Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson has been clear that he would stop the Massey Tunnel replacement project and go back to the drawing board.
“Revisiting the project” could set it back years and put at risk the $3 billion commitment David Eby secured from the federal government towards the new tunnel.
Doerkson has repeatedly said that he would “stop” and “revisit” the project to decide whether it should be a bridge or a tunnel:
“We would definitely be revisiting the project.” “The reality is, this whole project needs to be re-contemplated” Lorne Doerkson, ConnectFM, September 25, 2026
“...the reality is we need to recontemplate all of this, we just need to stop and better understand how we can get this solved as quickly as we can and I would consider anything…” Lorne Doerkson, RedFM, September 20, 2026
People living South of the Fraser can’t afford to wait longer while the BC Conservatives change course on the project - they want it to move forward and get done.
The BC NDP said at the time that there were commercial sensitivities around releasing updated costs while contract negotiations were underway, and that an updated estimate would be provided once the negotiations had concluded.
Budget 2026 documents in February stated that: “Due to commercial sensitivities related to releasing an updated estimate for the project before a contract is executed, the Province will update the project budget and schedule once negotiations with the contractor have concluded." (p. 52-53)
An updated cost estimate was provided in July, along with a $3 billion funding commitment from the federal government.
The BC NDP is getting this project done. We’re working with the Prime Minister and the federal government to build a toll-free, eight-lane tunnel that will reduce congestion, save drivers time, and provide dedicated space for cyclists and transit.

“The BC NDP is getting this project done. Lorne Doerkson’s plan to “revisit” the Massey replacement project would set it back years, and risk the funding David Eby secured from the Mark Carney and the federal government. Commuters can’t afford Doerkson’s plan to double their car insurance premiums and set back critical projects like this.”
