BC NDP announces new support for wildfire-impacted families, including those uninsured

SUMMERLAND – A re-elected BC NDP government will take new steps to support families impacted by this summer’s devastating wildfires. The new supports build on programs already available with a specific focus on uninsured properties, and funding to help rebuild essential community infrastructure.

“Wildfires can change a family’s life in a matter of hours. For people who have lost their homes, their belongings or their ability to earn a living, the road to recovery can be long and difficult,” said BC NDP Candidate Tina Lee.

As we saw with the devastating Lytton fires in 2021, many in the community who lost their homes were uninsured or underinsured and face significant costs as they rebuild their lives.

If re-elected, the BC NDP will match donations to the Canadian Red Cross up to $20 million for people affected by this summer’s wildfires, especially to support those who are uninsured and underinsured. Unlike immediate emergency assistance, these funds will help provide longer-term support as people recover and rebuild.

The BC NDP also committed to supporting rebuilding public infrastructure, which can amount to millions for road repairs, debris removal, and soil remediation on municipal and uninsured and underinsured properties.

“The needs are different for every resident who has suffered from these fires, but our commitment is the same: we will stand with people for as long as it takes to recover,” said David Eby, Leader of the BC NDP.

David Eby also highlighted the BC NDP candidates representing some of the most impacted communities, including Vernon-Lumby, Penticton-Summerland, West-Kelowna-Peachland, Fraser-Nicola, and Cariboo-Chilcotin.

“Our BC NDP team representing the communities impacted have made it clear that we must do more. Thank you, Harwinder, Tina, George, Kathryn and Jason. I’d also like to thank Amelia Boultbee for advocating for people in her community.”
