BC NDP commits $90 million to redevelop former Oak Bay Lodge site to deliver new health and seniors’ care services
OAK BAY – David Eby, Leader of the BC NDP, announced today that a re-elected BC NDP government will provide a $90 million contribution in provincial funding toward the redevelopment of the former Oak Bay Lodge site.
The site on Cadboro Bay Road is being planned as a new community health and seniors’ care hub where people can access a range of services closer to home, including care for seniors, long-term care, hospice and respite services, adult day programs and primary care.
“People should be able to get the care they need close to home, especially as our communities grow and our aging population needs more care,” said David Eby, Leader of the BC NDP. “The former Oak Bay Lodge site gives us a real opportunity to bring more health-care services to Oak Bay. We’re committing $90 million to help make that happen.”
For local residents, the redevelopment represents an opportunity to turn a familiar site into a place that provides care and services for the community for years to come.
“People in Oak Bay want to know this site will be used to meet the needs of our community,” said Diana Gibson, BC NDP candidate for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “This $90-million commitment means we can move forward with a vision that puts people first – making sure seniors, families and people who need health care can get the support they need right here in our community.”
The BC Conservatives have indicated that health care would take the brunt of their proposed cuts, putting investments like this at risk. The BC NDP is choosing to invest in health care and the services people rely on, rather than making cuts that would leave communities with less care.
The former Oak Bay Lodge closed in 2020, and the site is now owned by the Capital Regional Hospital District. Planning is underway with Island Health to determine the mix of services that will be provided at the site.
