BC NDP commits to helping Iqra build a new high school in Surrey
A re-elected NDP government will work with Iqra and the City of Surrey to support the next chapter of the school’s expansion
SURREY - The BC NDP will help the Iqra Education Society build a new high school in Surrey so Muslim students can continue their education in a school grounded in their faith and community.
“As B.C.’s first Muslim woman elected to the Legislature, I know representation matters,” said Amna Shah, BC NDP candidate for Surrey City Centre. “Students should be able to continue learning in a school that reflects their faith and community. We’ll work with Iqra to help this high school move ahead.”
Iqra began with 12 students and now reports more than 1,300 alumni. Its program combines the B.C. curriculum with Arabic and Islamic studies. A re-elected NDP government will work with Iqra and the City of Surrey to support the next chapter of the school’s expansion.
“Iqra has grown because Muslim families in Surrey believe in what we are building. Now we want to give our children the opportunity to continue their education through high school, without leaving the school community that has helped shape them. Amna Shah has taken the time to understand our vision and has committed to helping us achieve it. That's the kind of leadership our community needs,” said Iqra School Board Chairperson Dr. Ali Mihirig.
Surrey is growing fast, and the BC NDP is expanding school capacity across the city. Its plan includes 38 school projects creating 16,000 student spaces.
