BC NDP to connect people to new Cowichan Hospital with new bus route

A re-elected NDP government will work with BC Transit to expand service

DUNCAN - A re-elected BC NDP government will invest in an updated transit route to the new Cowichan hospital - connecting patients, families and workers to the hospital from surrounding areas.

“When the new hospital opens next year it will mean people in Cowichan Valley will have expanded access to healthcare that is close to home. But we need to make sure our infrastructure keeps pace with the growing communities and services,” said Debra Toporowski, BC NDP candidate for Cowichan Valley.

This bus route will be delivered through the BC NDP’s commitment to expand bus service and improve transit connections between communities through a $40 million per year funding boost to BC Transit.

“Whether it’s people getting to appointments, commuting to work, or visiting loved ones at the hospital, this new bus route will help more of them get to where they need to go, faster,” said Dana Lajeunesse, the BC NDP candidate for Juan de Fuca-Malahat.

Under the BC NDP, our province has seen the largest expansion of public transit in BC’s history. This includes increasing BC Transit’s operational funding by more than 80% since 2017, supporting expanded transit services across B.C., and letting kids 12 and under ride for free.

The BC Conservatives don’t have a plan to deal with the infrastructure needs on Vancouver Island. Their promises made in this campaign could add more than $5 billion in new operating spending and reduced revenues every year. This means slashing public transit funding, reducing services like health care, and downloading costs onto people.
