BC NDP steps forward with Niki Sharma in Vancouver-Hastings, committed to action for families and communities
Niki Sharma will represent the BC NDP in Vancouver-Hastings, pledging to put people’s needs ahead of powerful interests.
First elected in 2020, Niki Sharma is the Attorney General of British Columbia. Prior to holding elected office, she was a lawyer whose practice focused on representing Indigenous people, including residential school survivors. As BC’s Attorney General she led efforts to make online spaces safer by protecting people from the nonconsensual sharing of intimate images and holding social media companies accountable for harms to young people. She introduced BC’s nation-leading Anti-Racism Act. She worked to make family laws better for British Colombians, especially those experiencing violence which included the largest expansion of family law legal aid in history.
“People in Vancouver-Hastings need a government that represents their values, works to protect their rights and takes action on affordable housing,” said Sharma. “It is critical work that must continue — which is why we need to elect a BC NDP majority government in October.”
Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Vancouver-Hastings, including:
- Helping BC’s renters find — and keep — their homes by limiting rent increases, providing a renter’s rebate, introducing new tenant protections, and bringing tens of thousands of rental units back to market through the speculation tax and tough new restrictions on short-term rentals;
- Helping people get care when they need it by building and upgrading hospitals in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey and Richmond;
- Putting money back in your pocket by eliminating MSP premiums, lowering ICBC rates by $500 a year and boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445; and
- Saving lives by connecting people to harm reduction and treatment, adding hundreds of drug treatment and complex care spaces, and doubling the number of youth treatment beds.
“Niki has been an outstanding Attorney General, having led efforts to ensure British Columbians are kept safe and can get the justice they deserve,” said Premier David Eby. “She and the rest of our BC NDP team will continue taking action to lower costs and to make our Province safer.”
Niki Sharma will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
