BC NDP will expand access to Louis Brier for Jewish seniors

Commitment builds on successful pilot program prioritizing Holocaust survivors at B.C.'s only Jewish long-term care home

VANCOUVER – A re-elected BC NDP will work with Vancouver Coastal Health and Louis Brier Home to ensure more Jewish seniors can access long-term care in a community that reflects their faith, traditions, and values.

"Every senior deserves to age with dignity in a community that understands and respects who they are," said Sunita Dhir, BC NDP candidate for Vancouver–Langara. "For Jewish seniors, Louis Brier offers care that helps residents stay connected to their identity, heritage, and community. By expanding access, we’ll help more Jewish seniors live in a welcoming and comfortable environment where they feel at home.”

Building on the successful pilot program that prioritizes Holocaust survivors for admission to Louis Brier, the BC NDP will expand eligibility so all Jewish seniors seeking long-term care receive priority consideration for available spaces at the facility.

The change will not allow anyone to access long-term care more quickly or move ahead of others based on clinical need. Placement timelines will continue to be determined through the province's existing assessment process. Instead, when a Jewish senior is ready for placement, Louis Brier will be considered first whenever appropriate.

Louis Brier is British Columbia's only Jewish long-term care home and one of the few facilities of its kind in Western Canada. It offers residents kosher dining, religious services, and culturally familiar programming in a warm, supportive environment rooted in shared heritage and language.
