BC NDP will help build Burke Mountain Recreation Centre
$10 million investment will help deliver pool, library, and recreation facilities for Coquitlam families
COQUITLAM – Today, Jodie Wickens, BC NDP candidate for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain, and Jennifer Blatherwick, BC NDP candidate for Coquitlam-Maillardville, announced the BC NDP is stepping up to help fund the long-awaited community centre in Burke Mountain.
“Families want to have somewhere they can go to have some fun and get some exercise without having to travel too far or pay too much,” said Wickens. “A new rec centre and pool will provide important recreation opportunities in Burke Mountain and benefit families throughout the Tri-cities.”
The new rec centre will include a pool, a fitness centre, a library, public art, and several gathering spaces.
If re-elected, the BC NDP will provide the City of Coquitlam with $10 million towards the Burke Mountain recreation centre project to help move it forward while working with the local and federal governments to ensure its completion.
“We are thankful for this investment,” said Richard Stewart, Mayor of Coquitlam. “It's important that senior levels of government recognize the need to invest in amenities that ensure complete communities, like our North East Community Centre.”
“This rec centre will be an activity hub that people and families from all over Coquitlam can enjoy,” said Blatherwick. “With more space available for swimming lessons, workout classes, and community gatherings, families across the city will benefit from more access to the amenities they need right in their community. These are the spaces that families depend on and allow communities to thrive.”
The BC NDP’s plan will deliver important infrastructure for communities across BC, including roads, schools, and recreation centres. John Rustad would cut provincial capital investments, putting important projects at risk.
