FACT CHECK: Conservative claims on doctors do not match reality
Contrary to fearmongering from the BC Conservatives, the average family doctor in B.C. will still pay less income tax than in almost every other Canadian province under Eby’s plan.
And the BC NDP’s increased pay for doctors greatly exceeds the modest impact of the tax changes, which only impact the top 4%of income earners.
In 2023, BC introduced the new Longitudinal Family Physician payment model which significantly raised compensation for family doctors and has helped make BC the leader in doctors per capita in Canada.
Under the old fee-for-service model, the average family doctor grossed $250,000 before overhead.
Under the new model, the average full-time family physician in BC makes $385,000 a year
Under the BC NDP plan, that average physician would pay an additional $3,891 in income tax. BC just signed a renewed agreement with doctors equivalent to 3% per year over four years. That means an average full-time family physician will see a pay increase of $11,550 next year.

That same average family doctor would pay significantly higher provincial income taxes in almost every other province.

The BC Conservative plan for healthcare cuts would drive doctors out of BC. They oppose Eby’s successful U.S. doctor recruitment plan, are running a candidate slate that includes a fake doctor and anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists, and are putting forward a plan that will make healthcare cuts inevitable.
