Health care guarantee

I stand with David Eby to protect public health care in B.C. and oppose the US-style, privatized, pay-your-way system that Conservatives are implementing in Alberta.

I oppose any changes to our health care system that would:

  1. Charge patients for medically necessary care that is covered by BC Medical Services Plan
  2. Let people pay to jump the queue to get care faster than other British Columbians
  3. Pull staff and resources away from public health care.

The Conservative playbook

We've already seen it play out in Alberta.

  1. Step 1

    Say health care is safe

Danielle Smith ran on a promise to keep health care public and open to everyone.

  2. Step 2

    Win the election

    Then she got into power.

  3. Step 3

    Make you pay

Last year, she passed a law letting doctors charge patients out of pocket. If you can pay, you can jump the line for surgery.

Lorne Doerkson is running the same play

  • His Nanaimo candidate called a user-pay model the "only solution" for health care.
  • His health critic, Anna Kindy, has openly championed a private, pay-for-care system.
  • Doerkson has refused to rule her out as health minister.

Every BC NDP candidate can guarantee public health care will be protected. The Conservatives can't.

How David Eby will protect public health care

  1. 1

    Public Health Care Guarantee

Every BC NDP candidate has signed on to a pledge to protect B.C. from American-style, for-profit, pay-your-way health care by opposing out-of-pocket charges for medically necessary care, queue-jumping by those who can pay, and changes that pull staff and resources away from our public system.

  2. 2

Care with your health card, not your credit card

Close legal loopholes, strengthen rules, and bring nurse practitioners under the Medicare Protection Act to stop clinics from charging user fees.

  3. 3

    Phase out expensive agency nurses

Over the next three years, eliminate hospital reliance on costly private temp agencies by capping fees and hours and preventing people from working as agency nurses in the same hospital where they were recently employed. Redirect savings to rural travel nurse programs.

  4. 4

    Protecting science and public health

Investing in evidence-based health promotion and public awareness campaigns to counter misinformation on vaccines.
