Christy Clark makes stuff up about the carbon tax
Christy Clark has claimed that she will freeze the carbon tax and the BC NDP will double it. Both of these claims are false.
In fact, both parties plan to follow the mandated federal government plan – the only difference is that the BC NDP will expand rebates for low and middle income families to offset the federally mandated increases.
By 2022, every province in Canada must have an equivalent carbon price of $50/tonne from the current $30/tonne, as is required by the federal government carbon pricing mandate.
Our plan is to raise the carbon tax to $50 per tonne by 2022 to meet the federal mandate. Christy Clark must also meet the federal price of $50 per tonne by 2022.
Christy Clark's platform says they will "freeze" the carbon tax "until 2021". In 2021, she will have to increase by $10 to reach $40 per tonne; and in 2022, she will have to increase by another $10 to reach $50 per tonne. If she doesn't, the federal government will do it for her.
We prefer a made-in-BC approach. Our plan is predictable, clear, and reaches the federal mandate by 2022. Our plan will give back climate rebate cheques to 80% of families, making them better off than under Chrsity Clark's plan. We will also use additional carbon tax revenues to invest in job-creating infrastructure that reduces emissions, like transit.
Chrsity Clark is not telling the truth. She is hiding a $20/tonne increase to the carbon tax by 2022.
