Seniors can’t afford Doerkson’s health care cuts
Lorne Doerkson announced another round of hundreds of millions in uncosted promises - without a plan to avoid the healthcare cuts that are becoming more inevitable every day.
Yesterday’s tax plan alone will cost at least $3 billion a year - including $200 million in tax breaks going to the wealthiest British Columbians.
That’s the equivalent of 8,000 doctors.
UBC law professor and tax expert David Duff said yesterday that “the cost is enormous,” representing “a 20 to 25 per cent increase in the deficit just by that one measure and they’ve said they’re not going to raise any other taxes.”
And Doerkson’s simplistic claim that he can “flip the switch” and magically create natural resource revenue makes about as much sense as his plan to increase economic growth by lowering LNG production.
Conservatives have said it themselves that healthcare will “take the brunt” as the biggest item in the budget. With every announcement the math becomes clearer. It only adds up to cuts.
Last time conservatives were in government, 9 out of 10 care homes in B.C. did not meet government standards. The BC NDP has turned that around.
Now David Eby and the BC NDP are asking those who make the most in this province to pay a little more to fund healthcare for seniors and everyone here.
David Eby’s plan to support seniors includes:
- Making the shingles vaccine free for seniors,
- Expanding Home Care to help 5,600 more seniors stay safely in their homes longer,
- Building more long-term care beds faster and for less,
- Recruiting and training more healthcare workers.
