Sheila Malcolmson nominated to take action for people in Nanaimo-Gabriola Island
Sheila Malcolmson, a long-time legislator and advocate for the environment and gender equality, was today nominated as the BC NDP candidate in Nanaimo-Gabriola Island.
Twice elected as MLA, Sheila Malcolmson has a long career of serving her community. The past member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Ladysmith and Chair of the Islands Trust Council, Sheila serves now as the Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. She knows that people need a government that’s on their side, and has been taking action for them in every way.
“People in Nanaimo-Gabriola Island need a government that will help them tackle costs and get the housing and healthcare they need. That’s what our BC NDP team is working hard on,” said Malcolmson. “We can’t let Falcon or Rustad roll back all our progress.”
Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to the people of Nanaimo-Gabriola Island, including:
- Putting people ahead of speculators and investors by bringing in tough new restrictions on short-term rentals and a speculation tax, plus simplified approvals that make it easier and faster to get 300,000 new homes built;
- Connecting people to the care they need by hiring 700 more family doctors;
- Putting money back in your pocket by eliminating MSP premiums, lowering ICBC rates by $500 a year and boosting the BC Family Benefit by $445; and
- Working with the Green Party to develop CleanBC, the most ambitious climate plan in North America, and taking action to electrify the economy, create green jobs, and more opportunities for BC businesses.
“As a legislator, as an advocate for women’s equality, and as a fighter for the environment, Sheila has been taking action for people her whole career,” said Premier David Eby. “The people of Nanaimo-Gabriola Island would be well served to have her in their corner once again.”
Sheila Malcolmson will join David Eby and 91 other exceptional BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election, all committed to real action to help people build a good life here in BC.
