Weaver silent on candidate posts on the Holocaust, chemtrails, 9/11 conspiracies, fat shaming, drugs, “jailbait”
Andrew Weaver has spoken often about the calibre of his candidates, calling them “second to none” and frequently noting the presence of six PhDs. He even responded to a constituents’ concerns about Green candidates by claiming, “we’ve a stringent vetting process in place now too. It’s 2015!”
But according to a Vancouver Sun story, three BC Green Party candidates—Arthur Green, Ryan Marciniw, and James Marshall—have apologized over social media posts that “[make] light of pedophilia and drug abuse,” controversial comments about the Holocaust, support for “fat shaming,” and 9/11 conspiracy theories.
Unlike in the earlier controversy over Mark Neufeld’s impersonation of Martin Luther King, in which the party leader belatedly issued a short statement, Andrew Weaver has not commented on the controversy, disavowed the views expressed by his candidates, or said whether they retain his confidence.
The only comment so far has come from party communications staff, who claimed that all three individuals had “independently of one another and independently of this making its way to the surface, moved on from these views”—despite some of the posts being deleted as recently as Sunday.
This leaves a few unanswered questions for Weaver:
- When did you or your party become aware of these posts?
- When and how did the three candidates convince you that they had “moved on from these views?”
- As a scientist who talks a lot about “evidence-based decision making,” does it concern you that two of your candidates are promoting 9/11 conspiracy theories and chemtrails?
