Nine ways we're taking action for working people in British Columbia

Labour Day is a time to honour the working people who keep our province running—those who care for us, build our communities, and keep our economy moving.

It’s also a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come together, and how much stronger we are when we stand up for fairness.

Since your votes helped our BC NDP team form government in 2017, we've worked hard every day making life better and more secure for workers and their families. There's always more to do, but here are nine ways we've delivered real results so far.

Protecting Rights and Fair Pay

We put an end to contract flipping in health care and brought 4,600 workers back into the public system, restoring stability and fairness.

We also raised the minimum wagefrom $11.35 in 2017 to $17.85 today—and tied future increases to inflation so no one falls behind.

Supporting Union Jobs

We’ve made it easier for workers to join a union through single-step certification, and we’re ensuring more support and training for local workers on BC infrastructure projects through community benefit agreements.

Safer, Healthier Workplaces

Workers now have access to five paid sick days every year, so people don’t have to choose between their health and their paycheque. We’ve regulated and licensed asbestos removal contractors to protect workers from deadly exposure, and we’ve outlawed child labour while eliminating unfair serving wages.

Respecting All Workers

App-based gig workers are finally getting better wages and protections. And we’ve made sure provincial workers aren’t forced to cross federal picket lines—because respect for workers means standing together.

Looking to the future, and moving forward together.

On Labour Day — a holiday earned with the sweat, tears, hard work (and even blood) of working people around the world, we're proud to stand up for fairness, security and opportunity for every worker in this province we love. After all, when working people do better, we all do better. Happy Labour Day.
