BC NDP delivering more rapid transit for Surrey, getting you where you need to go faster
New Rapid Transit Corridor will alleviate traffic congestion for Surrey commuters
SURREY – BC NDP candidates Jessie Sunner (Surrey-Newton) and Rachna Singh (Surrey North) announced a campaign promise to open a new rapid transit corridor in Surrey.
This project will begin with a new, additional Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor from Surrey Centre along King George Highway to White Rock. This corridor will alleviate traffic by providing more high-frequency, high-capacity buses.
“Surrey is growing, and with that comes more people who are commuting every day. Whether it’s to work, to see loved ones or to run an errand, the BC NDP believes that you shouldn’t be stuck in traffic,” said Sunner. “It’s why we’re making sure that people who live in Surrey have more options to get where they want to go as quickly as possible.”
This project is a part of the BC NDP's commitment to deliver fast, frequent, and reliable service along King George Highway from Surrey Centre to White Rock. This new dedicated rapid transit lane can be built much more quickly, and allows future development of fixed rapid transit such as light rail transit or Skytrain. As work happens on the new BRT corridor, the BC NDP will also continue the expansion of the Surrey to Langley SkyTrain. John Rustad promised the SkyTrain extension to Langley in 2008, and never delivered.
“People in Surrey are frustrated with the congestion on our highways,” said Singh. “But instead of fixing this issue, John Rustad would bring back tolls, cancel infrastructure projects and cut transit, making traffic worse. People can’t afford that. The BC NDP is listening; we’re taking action to reduce traffic. Not only are we expanding the Skytrain, but we’re also going to give more people more options. This will mean you’ll spend less time on the road and more time with the people you love.”
