BC NDP nominates Premier David Eby in Vancouver-Point Grey to work for people

David Eby said he will keep looking out for people in Vancouver-Point Grey and across British Columbia after being officially nominated as the BC NDP candidate in the riding for the fall provincial election.

Eby was first elected MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey in 2013 and became Premier and leader of the BC NDP in 2022. Since being elected, Eby led measures to end rampant speculation in the housing market, build more homes people can afford, stabilise ICBC’s financial position and reduce the cost of car insurance, keep BC Hydro rates affordable, and improve health care services by hiring more nurses and doctors.

“We’ve been through a lot over the last four years including a pandemic, heat waves, wildfires and floods,” said Eby. “Today people are facing new challenges from inflation and interest rates. Our healthcare system is under stress, and years of speculators driving up the costs of housing has made it hard for people to afford a home. During tough times, people need a government that's on their side. That’s why we’re taking action to lower costs – like ICBC rates and childcare fees. We’re improving health care and attracting more doctors, nurses and health professionals so people get the care they need sooner, and we’re building more homes people can afford.”

“Kevin Falcon and John Rustad have put powerful interests ahead of people,” added Eby. When they were last in government they cut hospitals and schools, hiked tolls and BC Hydro rates, doubled MSP fees, and turned ICBC into a financial basket case and drove up rates for car insurance.”

Since forming government in July 2017, the BC NDP has taken action on crucial issues that matter to people including:

  • Strengthening healthcare by building and expanding hospitals in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby and Surrey;
  • Hiring new doctors and nurses, plus licensing internationally-trained health professionals to work in BC;
  • Tackling housing costs by taking on speculators, updating zoning rules to allow for more townhouses, duplexes and triplexes, and making it easier for cities to build more homes near transit; and
  • Connecting communities across the province with new infrastructure, including the Surrey-Langley Skytrain, Patullo bridge replacement and Massey crossing — while keeping tolls off bridges.

“My approach has been to bring people together to solve problems and take on powerful interests that are taking advantage of people,” Eby said. “We want to help people in Vancouver-Point Grey and across BC build a good life here.”

British Columbians will elect their next provincial government on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
